I like to think that I helped in getting my street made a 20mph zone.
Several neighbouring roads were already 20mph, and the council
published plans to extend the area but oddly left my street as a 30mph
rat run. I wrote to them to complain about the anomaly and the reply
was something like "err, yes, you're right, sorry". A few months
later the signs went up. Shows that it is worth asking.

I've woundered about the 20 zone on the A308 though hampton, the
narrow residential off it are 30. in practice traffic speeds tend to
be reversed.

About 100,000 people will ride through the heart of London in
Britain's biggest cycling festival this summer.

The 2008 London Hovis Freewheel will be more than three times the size
of last year's event, which was designed for 30,000 riders but saw
50,000 turn out.

Organisers have been able to enlarge the festival with extra funding
from City Hall, provided as part of a £10million investment in green
projects. As a result, it will be the second biggest cycling event in
Europe.

The London Cycling Campaign said "far more" money was needed to
complete the London Cycle Network speedily.

But the group supported Mr Livingstone's call for more 20mph zones.
Chief executive Koy Thompson said: "Making 20mph the standard speed
limit on London's streets is top of our cycling manifesto that we have
put to all Mayoral candidates.

"It is essential to reduce road danger and promote cycling in London.
Coupled with the return of one-way systems and streets to two-way
operation, this could have a significant role in getting people out of
cars and on to cycles."

The Council are in the process of dropping that 20 zone as the police
refuse to enforce it even for vehicles travelling at over 30! I have
asked traffic engineers about such reverse limits and was told "This is
current practice" . Traffic engineers live in a parallel universe.

I used to think that, but increasingly I am of the opinion that it is
divergent. It coincided with mine some time in the early 70s
(coincidently, when they last updated their dress sense), and has been
going somewhere else ever since.

good to be honest, any idea why it was started in the first place?
