Default Attaching Shimano gear system

I repaired a rear flat on an 18 gear Next mountain bike. It's pretty old.

It uses a Shimano gear system.

I can not figure out how it fits back together.

I think the rod with the gear system attaches to the axle but there is a small bolt and nut that is also supposed to be attached somewhere.

There is no dedicated hole in the frame for it to attach to.

Sorry for the "un-technical" terms.

Can someone assist me ?

Thanks,
Andy

LOOK THRU HE

http://goo.gl/MI9icM

you need the shifter name....nexus/hexus/sexus/plexus/ect...in the search.

if the name-type eg DEORE is available, then a direct search into Shimano's website is possible...there are exploded diagrams

cutaways...exploded diagrams....drawings....technical pdf...are all use able search terms

but Shimano direct has a stock.

for example using a DEORE hub number ...eg 530LX...the exploded drawing is available suggesting washer placement.

so save the box lid or right the number model name type down in the LOG BOOK

you have a LOG BOOK ?

Is this a bike with a nutted axle? No 10mm tapped derailleur tab on the
frame at the right hand dropout? A forked bracket on the derailleur unit
that fairly obviously gets clamped under the axle nut?

http://si.shimano.com/php/download.p...001-10-ENG.pdf

which is the Shimano Dealer Manual as .pdf
Look on page 8 where you will find a picture of "standard type" and
"bracket type" rear derailleur. The "bracket type" is the one that goes
with a nutted axle. It has a small screw and a U shaped "nut" that bolt
through the mounting bracket on the derailleur. The U shaped "nut" slots
into the frame axle dropout and the forked bracket lays on the outside
of the dropout and goes around the threaded rear axle. The U shaped
"nut" stops the derailleur on its bracket from rotating around the axle
if a lot of force is applied.
If someone has mislaid the U shaped bit of metal in the past he may well
have been replaced it with an actual hex nut. As long as it fits inside
the dropout it will work well enough on a pretty old 18 speed MTB as
long as it does not foul the freewheel assembly on the wheel.

Here is what I have.

The bolt and nut are the same but I see no way it can attach according to your picture.

Remove the wheel from your bicycle.
Bolt your gear changer in as shown in my linked photo above
Install wheel, check low gear adjustment and go ride.

Note #1 rear wheel axle will be all the way back against the
gear mount on the right side, it will be somewhere in the
middle on the left side such that the rim is centered in
your bike. Oil your axle nuts too.

Note #2 (for next time) you needn't remove the gear changer
to change a wheel.

where's the ROD ?

the axle locating bracket may be fragile...useful to Loctite the bracket down with clean threads and red Loctite.

one's I had wore apart....filed a grade 5 vanadium bolt head to fit then cut shaft, filed nut to jamb nut specs and red loctited

yes, a nut can be hammered in....but the nut will fall out when you hit the Gila bottom, no problem
