Import duties.
The high value of the Aus $$ makes a custom frame from the US look
very appealing, when even with $300US postage I can still get a quality frame for less than most Aust framebuilders can quote. I know this has been discussed before, but what duties are payable when importing a single frame from the US, with a dollar value of around $1400 - $1600 Aus. Brendo |

GST, possibly a processing fee (can't recall). Remember that the GST is charged on the value of the goods plus shipping - so if it costs $AU2000 for the frame and shipping to Australia, you're up for $AU200 in GST on top of that (for example). Have a look at http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/re...sByPostFAQ.pdf -- My Usenet From: address now expires after two weeks. If you email me, and the mail bounces, try changing the bit before the "@" to "usenet". |

If you email me, and the mail bounces, try changing the bit before the "@" to "usenet". Checked with an Aust Govt site, and the calc is as follows Price of goods + 5% Duty + Shipping costs = Value of Total Imports (VOTI) GST = 10% of VOTI Therefore, you pay around 15% on top of your Purchase + Shipping. EG (all in Aus$) Frame - $1500 Shipping from US $250 Total purchase price $1750. Duty (5%) - $87.50 GST = ($1750 + $87.50) x 10% = 183.75 Total Duties and Charges = $183.75 + $87.5 = $271.25 (which is 15.5% of the purchase price) Brendo |

All are liable to GST (including on postage as stated above), but there is a $1000 threshold - it goes under their radar if the price is less than that and you get off free. Even if the price is stated lower, Customs may still grab your parcel and ask for evidence of the price, e.g. an eBay invoice. Donga |
