Didn't spot anyone but had a great ride anyway (thanks for suggesting the route!) and weather was fantastic (except for the frozen toes which finally thawed about 2.5 hrs into the ride). -- Unregistered |

This week the optional Doreen loop was replaced by the optional Watsons Creek loop. If you were going south along Plenty Rd (between South Morang and Bundoora) between 9:40 and 10:00 you may have seen me heading north on the way home. I do recall seeing a lone rider or two going the other way. Geoff |

Wimped those last few hills on Plenty Road and took the all downhill route via Epping instead Re your comment in another post about "power at AT", just out of interest how does your coach define "AT"? In my mind it's something like the exertion level you can maintain for a reasonable period (15 - 60 minutes?) without totally blowing up, but I've read so many definitions (including statements that there's no such thing) I just get confused. -- Unregistered |

It's (with the exception of three slight rises and one steeper rise at Bundoora) all down hill until you get to Reservoir where there's a slightly longer rise after which it's all downhill to Northcote. What you meant to say was you took a longer loop out toward Epping rather than heading the direct route back to your start point, Yes??? Re your comment in another post about "power at AT", just out of interest how does your coach define "AT"? In my mind it's something like the exertion level you can maintain for a reasonable period (15 - 60 minutes?) without totally blowing up, but I've read so many definitions (including statements that there's no such thing) I just get confused. AT (Anaerobic Threshold) Heart Rate, as I understand it, is the point at which your body can no longer remove accumulated Lactic Acid from the body. The lactic acid then breaks down to form Lactate and Hydrogen Ions. The accumulation of the hydrogen ions then causes the onset of fatigue. The theory goes something like "Once you know the HR at which your AT is you can then use this information to determine the maximum intensity of exercise you can maintain for a long period". Over a period of training there should be decrease in the amount of Lactic acid produced for the same intensity of exercise. Therefore at same heart rate you should experience a higher power output.
