"[A person...] on a bicycle can go three or four times faster than the
pedestrian, but uses five times less energy in the process. He carries
one gram of his weight over a kilometer of flat road at an expense of
only 0.15 calories. Equipped with this tool, [a person...] outstrips
the efficiency of not only all machines but all other animals as
well." Ivan Illich

In that case, walking is far better exercise than cycling.

And cycling is far better exercise than motoring.

Does anyone claim that driving is a form of exercise?

Depends on how heavy the controls are. Formula 1 cars are apparently
quite hard work to drive, especially due to the g forces involved.

And I expect that a 1950s lorry must have been hard work too. My dad never
had a spare ounce on him.

I wonder if Simon's wife (shall we call her Janet) uses her car for
shifting their mutual children around, or for their joint shopping and
other family orientated tasks? If so Simon benefits from these
activities so why shouldn't he pay, perhaps she should invoice him for
her time and costs for each activity, then declare the income and pay
the tax, he could hardly complain about her sponging then. Would
bedroom activities be taxable?

....Husband "employs" wife and reduces his 40% tax bill. Wife pays zero or
basic rate on her "employment". Bring it on.

Mankind has invested more than four million years of evolution in the
attempt to avoid physical exertion. Now a group of backward-thinking

pumping our legs, gritting our teeth, and searing our lungs as though we
were being chased across the Pleistocene savanna by saber-toothed
tigers. Think of the hopes, the dreams, the effort, the brilliance, the
pure force of will that, over the eons, has gone into the creation of
the Cadillac Coupe de Ville. Bicycle riders would have us throw all
this on the ash heap of history. ~P.J. O'Rourke

P J O'Rourke is a well known American SATIRIST* best know for his role
with National Lampoon and books such as "Give War a Chance". Which
makes you quoting him in supposed support of your cause rather hilarious.

* Sati A poem, or in modern use sometimes a prose composition, in
which prevailing vices or follies are held up to ridicule. (OED)

Oh dear, oh dear - were you trying to look stupid

Keep digging.

You are a fool - he is holding up the folly of cycles to ridicule

He takes the **** out of people and things.
He is taking the **** out of cycles and cyclists - he often does
this.

He is taking the ****:

"A charity ball is like a dance except it's tax deductible."
"Never serve oysters during a month that has no paycheck in it."

I like this that he says about cyclists:

The Principle Arguments That May be Marshaled Against Bicycles:

1. Bicycles are childish.
2. Bicycles are undignified.
3. Bicycles are unsafe.
4. Bicycles are un-American.
5. I don't like the kind of people who ride bicycles.
6. Bicycles are unfair.
7. Bicycles are good exercise.

He is taking the ****.

I suppose you will have met him at your club.

Stopping distances for bicycles do not appear in the HC ... and so
cannot be of any consequence.
(Simon Mason - who cycles at 25mph in 20 mph limits - and thinks it's clever)

Errm. I actually created that concept you ****ing idiot.

See Simple Simon's wife drive her car.
Simple Simon's wife pays no road tax
Simple Simon's wife pays no tax on fuel
Simple Simon's wife pays minimum wage income tax + NI.
Simple Simon's wife paid no income Tax or NI for 16 years as an adult.
Simple Simon's wife has never paid Council Tax
Simple Simon's wife has never spent a penny on tyres, brakes, MOTs,
insurance, repairs etc.

So your wife is a bigger ****ing sponger than you are then?

I'm still reeling from the fact that you can accept the concept of a
sponging motorist - that's real progress.

Maybe you could call her "Janet. :-)

I wonder if Simon's wife (shall we call her Janet)

Probably more accurate to call her 'inflatable'.
