NYPD at August CM: Peeping Toms at Taxpayers' Expense
=v= Money nominally to fight terrorism: a gazillion dollars
for an infrared camera used from a gazillion-dollar helicopter during last August's Critical Mass in NYC, and what do they film? People making out on a rooftop: http://wcbs.dayport.com/launcher/219...Category_ID=48 (This is from last night's TV news on Channel 2. Unfortunately it pops up a window and uses Microsoft plugins.) _Jym_ |

=v= This is unfortunately a very Microsoft-centric video clip. If you can't play it, there's at least a text transcript: http://cbsnewyork.com/topstories/top...055153409.html _Jym_ |

=v= The NYPD has finally responded to the story about them using
surveillance cameras to spy on lovemakers. Basically it's their form letter press release, "We didn't do anything wrong. We stand behind our peeping toms." Both videos available in links from this page: http://www.times-up.org/press_view.p...2_nypd_cameras Alas, CBS2 is reliant on unfortunate technologies. I've had to run this from MS Internet Explorer with popups totally enabled. Yech. _Jym_ |

=v= Last night's TV-2 story on the "NYPD Peeping Tom" video,
filmed from a helicopter during last August's Critical Mass in NYC, revealed that a section of the tape was erased. The story doesn't mention this, but the missing time coincides with the (violent) arrests of Critical Mass riders on 2nd Avenue. It also coincides with the couple having sex on the rooftop. =v= This couple was in total darkness. The only way to peep on them would be with a helicopter with an infra-red camera. This is what "anti-terrorism" money is being used for. =v= Links to all three TV-2 segments are on this site: http://www.times-up.org/press_view.p...2_nypd_cameras These are in Windows media streaming format, alas, and I've only been able to view them in MS Internet Explorer (with popups enabled). View 'em while they're still there. _Jym_ |

All we know is that the tape entered into the public record as evidence does not include footage from the time in question. They might've been filming the couple having sex, or they might've been filming their own brutal arrests on 2nd Ave but somehow thought this wasn't some sort of evidence, or they might've just happened to choose that time to take a coffee break. We really don't know. I regret the error. _Jym_ |

The fact that you are just about the only one responding to yourself - besides me this time - should have been a clue. I'm interested. I think it's sick how much money the NYPD must be spending in the name of cracking down on "dangerous" group bicycle rides. We'd all be better off if they were to spend that money where the real danger is, the everday "critical mass" of motor vehicles. I think it's another example of the behind-the-windshield mentality that the police have that is probably not shared with the non-driving majority in NYC. -- Steven O'Neill |
