another nasty farcility
In my current duties as chauffeur for Mr Wafflycat, I did Cambridge & back
yesterday. Coming out of town towards the A14, driving along the Newmarket Road to the RAB with Wadloes Road, is this horror of a farcility. http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=caridge&countryCode=GB#map=52.21234,0.1626|20| 256&be=4260001|North&loc=GB:52.20273:0.13072:14|ca mbridge|Cambridge,%20Cambridgeshire,%20England,%20 CB1%201 or http://tinyurl.com/3zq2u2 The farcility gets cycle lanes/general road lanes crossing again, where a cyclist wanting to go straight on is placed in what appears to be direct conflict of motorised transport wanting to turn left. I didn't like it as a motorist and I would not be happy on it as a cyclist. What's the experience of urc Cambridge cyclists on this one? |

I didn't like it as a motorist and I would not be happy on it as a cyclist. I'm not in Cambridge, but it looks like a cyclist intending to go straight on is meant to use the cycle lane that runs between the left-turn lane and the right hand lane. Which means they have to cross the left-turning traffic further back. Personally, I would use the normal road lanes and hold that "facility" up as an example of why the use of cycle lanes must not be made compulsory. A cyclist would have to use the road anyway if they're turning left because there's a bloody great bus parked in the way :-) -- Paul Boyd http://www.paul-boyd.co.uk/ |

I didn't like it as a motorist and I would not be happy on it as a cyclist. What's the experience of urc Cambridge cyclists on this one? Not being a Cambridge cyclist I can't give a direct response but if I look closely I can see that traffic proceeding ahead from West to East is supposed to use the outside lane whilst traffic turning North is restricted to the nearside lane. If cycles proceeding East were using an ordinary cycle lane without a secondary positioning 'filter' lane they would still need to cross the traffic turning North to position themselves to move ahead. Staying in the nearside lane would place them in conflict with traffic turning North. The marking of the lane draws attention to a manoeuvre which a cyclist would have to make in any case so could act as a warning to the predictively challenged. Sniper8052 |
