Are you that guy who, after the cards are dealt, says, "Oh, and one-eyed Jacks are wild" ? Trump won the election. I just wish he would stop talking about how marvelous his victory was and move on to telling us what his plans are to fix everything that he says only he can fix. So far we only hear that he's the only one that can fix the mess that he was left with because he's the smartest, least racist, least antisemitic and bestest of all on the earth. The propensity to speak only in superlatives is grating as hell. Watching that speech yesterday was painful. I'm not sure how anyone can listen to that and think that we're OK. I'm sure. Try some of Lewis Caroll's poetry, which generally has meter, usually rhymes, but makes little sense since he contrives some of his words for the ocassion: https://www.poemhunter.com/lewis-carroll/poems/ They make a little more sense when you read some of the saccharine Victorian children's lit that they were satirizing. I recommend Martin Gardner's _Annotated_Alice_. Some of the words are easily enough understood that they have entered the standard English lexicon, eg "chortle". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Annotated_Alice The only time Alice in Wonderland made sense to me was when I was indulging in controlled substances. I'm not sure I really want to understand Lewis Caroll. I might make the magic disappear. Actually, there are art forms for any ONE of the three basic requirements. If it has meter, but nothing else, it's a tone poem. If it makes some sense, but doesn't rhyme or have a meter, it's free verse. If the words make sense, but lack rhyme or meter, it's called prose. So the difference between free verse and prose is "makes some sense" vs "makes sense"? I must run into a lot of inadvertent free verse in my daily life. Yep. We have a great example of incomprehensible free verse in this very newsgroup. Just read anything by DATAKOLL MARINE RESEARCH, which is genuine free verse, devoid of rhyme, meter, structure, punctuation, and conventional English grammar and spelling. However, because it does make some sense, it should be considered one level above a word salad. To quote myself: Poems will come in many ways, Rhyme will be what I do praise. Iambic pentametre or some such, Meter matters, oh so much. Free verse has no rhyme or meter, temper, stanza or worth either, Ask among the few that knows, If it don't rhyme, then it is prose. Maybe blank verse is the way, that the world thinks today, Maybe poets lack the time, To write poems in verse and rhyme. Art is what we make of it, Rhyme and meter and some wit, All I ask is that you curse, The latest plague of free verse. -- Jeff Liebermann 150 Felker St #D http://www.LearnByDestroying.com Santa Cruz CA 95060 http://802.11junk.com Skype: JeffLiebermann AE6KS 831-336-2558 |

Still, I haven't written any poetry since I discovered there isn't any money in it, though when I was a kid, my two early volumes of teenage poetry got me an exchange scholarship to a foreign school (where, before they saw me in action, the authorities thought a poet might be a limp wimp open to bullying, and so placed me in the senior girl prefects' common room, which was an education), and they probably helped with many of the college scholarships I won. To hear that poetry is evidence of intent is shocking. You have to be a deeply illiterate to believe that a novelist agrees with everything or even anything his characters do and say, and surely the same should apply to poets (in which I don't include rappers, who should be prosecuted for noise pollution): you can't hold that sappy crap against anyone!
