This is embarrassing. I spent more time complaining about the problem
than fixing it. Sorry(tm).

It's an old Minoura MagTurbo. Kinda like this:

I just tore it apart and found that one of the bearings is wobbling
badly and probably with a broken ball cage. I'll pull the bearings
tomorrow, take measurements, and see if I can find replacements. Also,
I just ordered a new front wheel riser block to replace the block of
wood I just accidentally fed to the wood burner.

UCSC is located on top of a hill. Its newspaper is called "City on a
Hill". If I could successfully ride my bicycle from my office, up the
hill, to the East Field House, I would not need the use of the
exercise machinery.
