How wide are "23c" and a "25c"? I bought some Maxxis 23c recently that were 22 mm. I did not like that.

Also, has anyone ever picked up the Avocet FasGrip/Carbon 12 design? That was my favorite tired ever. Who actually made that?

I am limiting my concern to clinchers.

Is Avocet still selling tires? Where? They were made by IRC.

Arrgghhhh. pet peeve The "C" does not refer directly to width, it
refers to the bead seat diameter of the rim. It's 700C x width not 700
x (width)C. 700 mm used to refer to the outside diameter of the wheel
and there were three different bead seat diameters for that size: 700A,
700B and 700C. The A size used the narrowest tires and the C size used
the widest (there were also 650A, 650B, 650C and other sizes with the
same suffixes). The 700C size was the familiar 622 mm BSD with a tire
about 40 mm wide. Somehow that ended up being the standard Continental
road rim (while England and the US used 26" and 27" sizes as standard)
so we roadies mostly all ride 700C rims with various width tires- from
18 mm to 50+ mm- even though that used to be the size for utility bikes.

IRC in Japan made them. They've been gone for years. Michelin has
taken up the slick tread design. In addition to the slick tread, the
Avocet tires also had a particular rubber compound. Those were good
tires. I also used to like the Michelin Super Comp HD a whole lot and
those are also long gone. Fashion rather than function dictates tire
design, like so many other things in bike design. Cool and hip sells,
old fashioned and stodgy looking doesn't even if the latter works
better.

I am limiting my concern to clinchers.

Consider the Grand Bois line of tires, made by Panaracer. I use the
Paselas and like those; they are fairly inexpensive (unlike the Grand
Bois line) and ride pretty nice. The Grand Bois are highly regarded for
ride quality; I haven't ponied up for them.

Panaracer (and Gran Bois, Soma, etc labels) products are
indeed nice tires. If you liked the SuperComp Michelins, get
the current Lithion with thicker tread than a Pro 4. Pro 4
are lighter.

I haven't looked at the Michelin tires since they went rainbow colored a
decade or two ago. The Super Comp HD tires became Synergics, or
something like that, and I liked those too. I'll have a look at the
Lithions. Thanks for the tip, Andrew.

Black or black/grey are always in the lineup.

But hey color costs no more! Accent your boring bike with a
tire stripe:

Thanks. I'll try the Pro 4---I like light tires.
