I think that sometimes people need to take a step back and say "**** happens". I think this is just one of those occasions.

However, Mr Steele is right to highlight the dangers of retractable dog leads. Two years ago my parents had to call 999 for a woman whose calf muscle had been ripped to shreds by a retractable lead, one end was held by a dog walker and the other end attached to a German shepherd chasing a swan into Chichester Harbour. (The ambulance couldn't get to the hapless woman, so the coastguard was called to rescue her).

I very much doubt that the victim in this case has received £65,000 for her suffering.
