2019 - you MUST leave a 5 foot overtaking gap!

Overtaking cyclists. "Drivers need to leave enough space for cyclists when they overtake them or face a £100 fine. The Highway Code states there should be 4ft 11in (1..5 metres) between the car and cyclist - around the width of a car door." https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...know-2019.html |

Would you care to point out where in the 2019 edition of the Highway code a requirement to allow 1.5m exists? https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-high...oad-159-to-203 |

Besides, almost everybody (vocal cyclists included) will fail to notice that it is 1.5m wheel to wheel, not mirror to elbow. A strange omission by whatever government organistion put this forward. I think relative speed is the issue. I remember cycling with a friend from her flat in Kensal Green across the city to Greenwich. Crossing Tower Bridge we were shoulder to mirror with subsidised vehicles but it did not feel dangerous. |

The pushbike rider is not required to give any sort of gap whether the vehicle is moving or not. Besides, almost everybody (vocal cyclists included) will fail to notice that it is 1.5m wheel to wheel, not mirror to elbow. A strange omission by whatever government organistion put this forward. It isn't 1.5m anything to anything 1.5m is not in the Highway Code at all and even the CTC or whatever they call themselves this week oppose a mandatory passing distance. |

That is supposing that your average driver will actually *read and learn* the new 2019 edition of the HC anyway, let alone act upon it. We can only hope. It isn't 1.5m anything to anything 1.5m is not in the Highway Code at all The article says something about 2019. We're not quite there yet. and even the CTC or whatever they call themselves this week oppose a mandatory passing distance. Probably for similar reasons I gave above - the rule makers musn't upset the misery faction. |

But the Highway Code is, the Nov 2018 edition is the 2019 version. It amends S163 to say :- "Rule 163 Overtake only when it is safe and legal to do so. You should...give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car" Note even in this the rule is a "Should", not as claimed a "Must" |
