You know, I was thinking about this thread while eating my General Mills Cheerios this morning (http://www.cheerios.com/) and sipping some excellent Kirkland brand whole-bean French roast (ground with my Capresso stainless steel grinder http://www.1stincoffee.com/capresso-metal-infinity.htm). I wondered, do I really need to wear a helmet -- perhaps a Bell Gage helmet with 26 massive vents and the X-Static padding for cushioning, moisture transfer and odor resistance? Do I really need Bell's proven TAG fit system that gives me hassle-free adjustment with the turn of a dial? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Els5J6TEJTc But, I wondered, will it save me from serious head injury? Alas, nothing in the commercials even suggests that it might save my head from anything -- except maybe a bad haircut! But it looks fast and may turn me into a skinny racer dude, so I'm getting one! And as a lawyer, you should understand why! -- - Frank Krygowski |

The medium roast, Kirkland Columbian whole bean, is a better choice. French Roast beans are over-roasted. Some Costcos have in-store roasters but they took those out of the Costcos near me after a fire http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_14310247. The Kirkland granola is a better choice than the Cherrios. Most things are a better choice than Cheerios -- but I wanted some damned Cheerios! I usually get the SF Bay Roasters Columbian, but I'll try the Kirkland next time. Of course, this is my industrial strength cheap coffee, because here in Portland, our serious coffee is single variety, small batch artisanally roasted, picked by happy Buddhist monks on a sunny day, cruelty free coffee. -- Jay Beattie. |

We typically see the following: It's very interesting to me that you claim a plethora of studies while someone else claims they don't exist. Your claim might be easier to prove than his. Myself, Alone. and several others, have published lists of the studies numerous times. Check the archives using deja.com. And these are peer-reviewed, statistically-sound, scientific studies, not crazy anecdotes or wild made-up theories. Better to check them on www.cyclehelmets.org where you will find all the studies AND critiques of methodology, both for and against. The AHZs don't even try very hard anymore. We know you're a total crackpot (even your self-invented acronym and description of "anti helmet zealot" shows that), so it's only when you try lying to someone else that we bother to point them in the right direction. I don't know of anyone who is "anti helmet" as you keep trying to claim. I know many who are very sceptical of the outlandish claims made in support of them by over-zealous advocates though, and have given up wearing them or advocating them based on their own review of the evidence. After giving up on trying to advocate based on facts and logic, We know you're immune to both facts and logic. they've retreated back to the "pedestrian helmet and gardening helmet" schtick once again. And one "study" that says that motorists pass helmeted cyclists with less clearance than non-helmeted cyclists. That's it, that's all they've got left! No, it's just one that you pick on to argue with, despite it's proper peer review and general acceptance. You are the one who keeps going back to ridiculous lies, wild claims, and the "study" (which nobody has ever been able to replicate) which falsely stated 85% effectiveness. Note that the same data as was carefully collected for that "study" also showed that helmet wearing produced a 75% drop in leg injuries, which indicates how badly the "study" is flawed. One of the authors has disowned it, and in many places it is actually illegal to cite it! Significantly, they even grudgingly gave up on the lie that compulsory helmet laws caused a decrease in ridership! You mean you repeated the lie that compulsory helmets don't have any effect on ridership in the face of all the available evidence so many times that we realised that it was pointless to argue with a compulsive liar. Any third party can check it for themself through the links on the web site already given. They now claim that while ridership actually went up even after the law, that the law caused the rate of increase to be less than the rate of increase in population. Even though there are a plethora of reasons as to why ridership goes up or down over time. You mean you even lie about what evidence we produce? Nice move, but all the actual studies are linked to on the aforementioned website, so people can make up their own minds. Of course, that only applies to people with minds, not failed attempt at AI. Note that I've never even heard of anyone who has been convinced BY THE ACTUAL EVIDENCE to wear a helmet, but know several who have stopped wearing them after studying it (often in considerable detail), some of whom were keen helmet advocates until they actually read the studies. But okay, here's one to get you started, since it's one that upsets the AHZs the most: http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/episrv/episrv-bike-report.pdf Read pages 14 and 16. Cherrypicking again. Note to the uninformed, scharf is the failed "guerrilla marketer" of numerous useless knick-knacks on which he gets a kickback if people are stupid enough to follow the links on his website. NOTHING he says is worth considering, except maybe as an indication that it is probably incorrect. If he said at mid-day that the sun was up, I'd still recommend looking out of the window (i.e. just look at the evidence yourself). An apt description.
