Default Adams Trail-a-Bike - SAFETY RECALL

Got a package from Wiggle, who I bought our trail-a-bike from, this
morning enclosing new bolts and instructions. Turns out here has been
safety issue with trail-a-bikes, anyone who has one should read up on
it he

http://makeashorterlink.com/?L15F14D1B

" What is the product involved in the recall?

Products involved in the recall include the Adams Trail-a-bike and
Slipstream products. .... We are including all models produced and
sold under the Trail-a-bike and Slipstream brand name between 1996 and
2004. Model names include Starter, Folder, Shifter, Shocker, Ultimate
Tandem, Deluxe Folder, Me 2 and Original. ... All units on the market
are potentially affected.

What is the Problem?

The universal hitch that connects the Trail-a-bike (or Slipstream) to
the lead bicycle may have been assembled with hardware that is either
out of specification or may have been incorrectly assembled at the
factory. The bolts on the universal hitch may not penetrate the
“Nylock” nut deep enough to ensure that it cannot loosen or vibrate
off. This could cause the nut to unthread allowing the bolt to work
its way out and fall off. As a result, the unit would separate from
the leading bicycle while in tow.

I own a Trail-a-bike or Sliptream product, what should I do?

Trail-a-bike or Slipstream product owner should stop using the product
immediately. The unit must inspected by a bicycle retailer. Units will
be repaired free of charge to you if necessary. To prevent the hitch
hardware to fall off, Norco Products Ltd. is offering a free repair
kit consisting of new longer bolts, concave washers, flat washers,
Nylock nuts and a new Neoprene universal joint cover sleeve.

What can happen if the product fails?

If the Trail-a-bike unit were be to separate from the lead bicycle,
the rider on the Trail-a-bike could sustain serious injury or death.

Was there any accidents or problems reported with Trail-A-Bike?

A total of 2 reports have been made over the course of the past year.
Only one involved an injury which happened this summer in late August
of 2004. The first incident, this past June, was the result of one of
the universal joint nuts falling off. It caused the unit to separate
from the lead bicycle. No injury was reported. The second report
happened in August 2004 in Seattle. The child was injured when the
unit separated from the lead bicycle after one of the universal joint
bolts fell out. "

Full marks to Wiggle for being on the ball, knowing who had bought the
products off them and sending the stuff out before you even knew there
was a recall.

Hmm. Possibly. The left-pondian recall press release is dated
December 2004. Don't know if the fact it has taken till now to notify
wiggle customers is down to Wiggle or Adams. Ah well. We know now,
anyways.

Still the case that you wouldn't have known about it if Wiggle hadn't
been proactive about handling it rather than doing as most retailers do
and sit back and wait for the customers to contact them. How many other
Adams owners have been contacted by the place they bought it from?
