Default Any recommendations for Anti-Pollution face masks?

I've had a wheezy chest for a couple of weeks now, and I've decided
it's down to my Bristol commute (the air was particularly bad this
morning, but we're probably far enough from Hemel Hemstead for it to be
purely local).

Wiggle have got some scary looking masks, chap at work suggested going
down B&Q and getting decorators' masks. Any suggestions? For £25 I'd
want to wear something I'm comfortable in.

I had a respro for riding around London.

Simon L came up with the following;:

Respro are good.

IMHO it doesn't matter what the mask looks like, if it performs well but,
more importantly I feel, is that it's comfortable enough to wear it as often
as necessary. Otherwise you'd (I'd) just not wear it. I'd suggest trying
them on, finding one or two types / styles that suit you and then buing mail
order ...

Paint spraying masks are pretty good, as are welders fume masks and inserts,
if a bit industrial and cumbersome, depends on which make and what's
available. Have a look into a local tool hire place ... .

I have not been able ride comfortably in any mask at any price. YMMV.

There is an innate problem with any mask; pushing 5-50 litres per minute
through a mask is HARD WORK; there is also the matter of dispelling a
large amount of moisture.

You may also like to consider that a mask's efficacy drops after a short
period of use.

I suggest you keep your money and get you GP to treat your wheeziness.

Simon is it possible that you suffer from exercise-induced bronchospasm?
Check out google for some definitions. This is brought on by breathing
in cold dry air.

I suffer from this a bit, but not enough to bother me (although I do
sound a bit like an old man after my cycle to work in the colder weather
(like today!).

If it is bothering you, as Helen has suggested, it might worth a trip to
your GP.

Cheers

Like DaveB said, see the doc first. I get exercise-induced asthma
throughout the winter, and salbutamol does the needful.

I used to get this and was also recommended to see a doctor. However, as
the cause was fairly obvious, as you state - cold air and not being a big
fan of GPs ("Take two aspirin and if it gets worse over the next 6 months I
*might* refer you if you push me hard enough. Times up!") my first thought
was "how do I warm up the air?" Guess what I used - a Respro mask! It did a
wonderful job of warming the air just enough so that the problem never
occurred again.

Now of course, I'd happily be experiencing the cold weather that I'm used
to this time of year. It's meant to be 30C this weekend :-/

You might find that a scarf does the trick, without making you look like
a bandit or breaking the bank...

I found a quaffiah to be very good. Nice open weave that doesn't
inhibit breathing, big enough and light enough to give lots of capacity
and to tuck under the edge of the ski goggles. Works fine down to -15C
but I wouldn't want to ride round parliament square wearing it now they
have armed polis..
