Default Thank you Tarmac!

Just got back from a thoroughly enjoyable 52km on the bike to turn the legs
after Saturday's audax. There were some errands that required doing, so
rather than take the car I took the bike. At one point I was crossing the
A47 and thought "b*gg*rit!" as the road I wanted to be on was closed for
resurfacing. I was not looking forward to several miles cycling on the A47.
But the nice chappies in the contractor's vehicle at the start of the closed
section waved me through. A bit further along, the road was being completely
resurfaced for its entire width. Cue contractors with gentlemanly manners.
No problem, said they, just walk along the verge. The verge was narrow and
unasked; one of the workmen came over, took my bike from me and carried it
for me along the narrow bit. What a gentleman! Being a polite cyclist I
thanked him and the rest of the guys for their cooperation & assistance. To
top it off, *all* motorists were exceedingly courteous to me. Hurrah! What
an enjoyable cycle ride! Sun, blue skies, fresh breeze, courteous motorists,
all topped off with thoroughly gentlemanly highway contractors. Double
hurrah!

wafflycat was thinking very hard :

Must be something in the air. I've just got back from an enjoyable
ride, during which I crossed the A131 at a staggered crossroads just
north of Halstead; as I was waiting to cross a motorist travelling on
the 131 actually stopped and waved me across! That's only ever happened
to me (on a bike) once before, and the first time I was near Goes...

Maybe you should drop their boss a line, to balance all the complaints
they probably get about inconveniencing people.

Might want to be a bit careful here - it could be that their actions were
strictly against the rules. So yes, thank them, but be non-specific about
exactly what they did.

cheers,

Tarmac responded to me within minutes.

"Many thanks for your feedback. It makes a refreshing change to receive a
thank you at the customer enquiries mailbox.

I will make sure that the contracting team receives your praise."

So it seems it's been taken as it should be

Excellent :-)

FWIW I've nearly always had good experiences with road digging bods.

cheers,

There's a big Tarmac quarry up the road from me and the HGV drivers going to
and from the quarry are very courteous drivers for the most part. As I cycle
round the lanes I'm treated with courtesy, given loads of room when they
overtake and they don't overtake unless it's safe to do so. When they're
oncoming - several will give a wave as they pass. Good lads. If there were
more drivers like them, it would be a good thing.

They'll be on bloody strict orders to be courteous. Every complaint about a
wagon is another reason for their mineral rights to not be extended.
Particularly when they probably have quite a few local farmers who hate them
for buying someone elses' land instead of theirs and looking for any reason
to complain.

I find HGV drivers tend to be more courteous and give me more room and
respect than the average driver. I find I give HGVs more respect than most
other motorised traffic.
