Would you elaborate a little? Use a normal pulley puller or such with the allen bolts in the chain rings? thanks. No. JG is saying you could get self-extractors. I think it's a stretch to say that "modern cranks now come with" them, but they are available. Only $12.95: http://tinyurl.com/fsaselfext |

Old chainrings 5 bolt. New chainrings 4 bolt. So you bought new rings with the wrong bolt pattern, and now to save $10 on a crank puller, you want to destructively pull off your old cranks and replace with new. This is the epitome of what I dislike about even asking questions here. I ask a simple question, and in return get 9 more questions that have less to do with answering my question than they do questioning the reasons I am doing what I am doing. If there was a way for all USENET to hear my frustration (rather than the few readers of this thread) I would say: ANSWER THE ORIGINAL QUESTION OR F'ING DON'T WRITE ANYTHING. To those who actually did the former, thank you. I am grateful. * Cut it with an oxy-acetelyne torch. |

"Gone Fishin'" wrote in message ... Good idea. But it's more of a convenience than a money saver, given the cost of the "one key release" kits. It sounds like this is all about saving money. Or simply trying to prove that something can be done without the right tools. I just don't like buying tools I'll use once. The second time I need it, I'll buy it. But tools just to populate my shop? No. Not if I can borrow or DIY a tool. He probably has an old HD. :-) No (whatever that is). Harley Davidson. Supposedly you could fix a lot of things with a hammer, screwdriver and crescent wrench. --Mike-- Chain Reaction Bicycles www.ChainReactionBicycles.com |

I also beat one off with a hammer on an old peugeot from the seventies that had a three bolt simplex crank. Now that job took some time and I would not advise doing it on anything but a junk bike. |

Along the lines of desperation I once used a Dremel and about 4 carbide cutting wheels to get a crank off 'after' it had ruined my puller. It was an el cheapo Chinese crank from Ebay. I know *must* have a reply as to all 3 chain rings being separate entities rather than the removable 3 pieces as a until junk type. I always prefer too look and feel but that takes 3 times more money at the LBS's I have. If you aren't buying a bike then you are wasting their time. The ex-Schwinn does that to me but not the ever independent "Van's" who is run by a nice low key guy. Side note; Has anyone ever seen a square taper that looks like it is rotated 90 degrees from where it should be? I have seen one and it sits possibly forever in the box of curiosities. Bill Baka |
