Default NEW POST Chasing down creak noises

My situation is different than Andre's, so I'll start anew. Creak
begins about 40 km into ride. Noise occurs on downward pedal stroke,
more so on right/dominant-leg push. Swapped pedals, replaced bottom
bracket... but it was back on today's ride. Get's progressively worse
after beginning. I hate noises so ignoring it is out of question.

Hi there.

A steel frame? Possible frame flex at the bttom bracket area?

Cheers from Peter

Default NEW POST Chasing down creak noises

my creak,
tried different pedals
replaced bottom bracket
checked chainring bolts
checked carbon fork for cracks and steerer-ok
turned out it was in the headset, sounded like it was
coming from the bottom bracket. repacked headset
bearings and grease on bearing seal and stopped creaking.
figure it started because I wash my bike occasionally.
got so bad thought something was going to break.
started when out of the saddle sprint, then began to creak
on hard pedaling. headset bearings had grease, must have
been the seal on the bottom of headset from washing the bike.

Don't wash your bike any more often than you'd wash the engine of a
car. Wipe dust, wax paint, whatever-- but leave anything that
requires lubrication alone, unless you immediately replace the
lubricant.

The worst bikes that come through my shop are the ones that are
completely encrusted with filth and the ones that are spotless.

What do you think about these spray on/wipe off cleaners that are
showing up in shops? Sounded like a good idea to do a dry clean but I
wonder if it's worth the price instead of just car wash soap and a re-lube.

Long ago, guys in my club started "washing" their bikes by using Lemon
Pledge furniture cleaner. Either spray it on directly, or spray on a
paper towel, then wipe the frame off. Keep it off braking surfaces,
of course. Works well for me.

Or at least, it worked well for decades. I noticed this spring my old
1986 Cannondale touring bike has some of its original paint bubbling
up by a couple of the cable guides. It's probably corrosion from the
action of moisture on the dissimilar alloys. Maybe if I'd used
thicker wax it wouldn't be there?

But 25 years out of a paint job isn't bad.

To much trouble:

As Chalo said, lube after cleaning. In this case only the chain and
forklegs.

Seat or post? Had a similar creak and took me forever to find it. I
think it was where the rails went into the plastic of the shell. Took
me forever to realize that it only happened when I was in the saddle.
