2004 Verge Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-Cross Championship Series

Race #6 – Beacon Cross (UCI C2) (Crank Brothers USGP – race #5)

Bridgeton, NJ – November 20, 2004

Race #7 – Highland Park CycloCross (UCI C2) (Crank Brothers USGP – race #6)

Highland Park, NJ - November 21, 2004

The 2004 Verge Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-Cross Championship Series moves to New Jersey
this coming weekend for two days of high octane action. Not only do the races
count as part of the hotly contested Verge Mid-Atlantic series, both races are
also part of the Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross. In fact
Sunday’s race is the Gran Prix finale where everyone will find out what
riders win automatic selection to the World Cyclocross Championships in St.
Wendell, Germany in February 2005. World team spots will be given to the
overall series winners in the Elite Men, Elite Women, Under-23, and Junior
categories.

Saturday’s action takes place at Beacon Cross (UCI C2) in Bridgeton, New
Jersey and on Sunday, racing moves to Highland Park Cyclocross (UCI C1) in
Highland Park, New Jersey. The Beacon course will challenge a rider’s
technical skills with the combination of sandy dirt roads, a sandy beach run,
lots of twists and turns and of course, the ever popular run –up in the
“theater of pain.” The next day the Highland Park course will test a
rider’s speed and strength as it incorporates numerous high-speed areas that
encourage the use of pack tactics and road racing strategies. Highland Park
has been the site of several nail biting, down to the wire sprint finishes over
the past few years. With most of the course visible from any location, the
venue has become a spectator favorite.

The Elite Men’s field is expected to be packed with talent including current
Crank Brothers Gran Prix of Cyclocross Series leader Geoff Kabush (Maxxis
Giant). The current leader of the Verge Mid-Atlantic Series, Ryan Leech
(Fort/GPOA) will also be on the start line. Riders looking to upset both
series leaders will include Marc Gullickson (Redline), Ryan Trebon (Kona) who
is fresh off a win at the Chainbiter 6.0 event, teammate Barry Wicks (Kona) who
won the UCI C1 race at Granogue last month, Adam Craig (Maxxis Giant), Mark
McCormack (Clif Bar – Colavita) winner of last Sunday’s Cycle-Smart
International, 2004 Olympian Todd Wells (GT/Hyundai), current U23 Gran Prix
leader Matt White (NCC/Bikereg.com), Jesse Anthony (Cyclocrossworld.com) and
Verge MAC U23 series leader, Greg Wittwer (Cyclocrossworld.com). Others
riders expected include Greg Marini (Bike Doctor), Mike Yozell and Gunnar
Shogren of the Fort/GPOA team, and Joe Reynolds (Wisshickon).

The Elite Women’s field will be just as star packed as the Men’s field with
the likes of Ann Knapp (Kona), Gina Hall (Missing Link), Barbara Howe (Velo
Bella), Anna Milkowski (Rona) and Mary McConneloug (Seven Cycles) in the mix.
Knapp currently leads the Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross Series
and Hall is holding down second place. McConneloug picked up back to back wins
in New England last weekend at the Chainbiter 6.0 and the Cycle-Smart
International so she is quite confident coming into this weekend. Other riders
will include Rhonda Mazza (Vanilla/S&M), Sarah Kerlin (Velo Bella), Josie Beggs
(Starbucks Double Shot) and current Verge MAC series leader Betsy Schauer
(Fort/GPOA). Mid-Atlantic representation will include Sami Fournier (Velo
Bella) , Amber Itle (Yellow Breeches Racing) and Melanie Swartz (Squadra
Coppi).

Racing action will start at 10am both days with races for riders of all
abilities. Elite racing gets underway at 1:30pm with the start of the Elite
Women’s race.
