Free water taxi for cyclists
The cycleway across the Harbour Bridge will be closed on 18 March from Noon
to 11pm for the 75th anniversary walk event, where no vehicles will be allowed, including it seems, bicycles. The RTA said on its website that an alternative route would be made available for cyclists. No details were given but in answer to email queries to the event website at ourbridge.com.au someone called Pamela has said there will be a free water taxi plying between North Sydney and Walsh Bay (just west of the bridge). Dont know what frequency if any it will run. Takes bikes too, natch. Sounds completely loopy, it would have been IMHO easier and more in keeping with promoting cycling to just set aside a lane for cyclists on the bridge deck, but if you fancy a harbour cruise the offer might never be repeated. Nothing so far on their website about this offer, nor on the RTA. The only thing about bikes says, under a FAQ about alcohol, "Please leave the following items at home: alcohol, glass, pets, skateboards, bicycles, and roller blades", so you can see how the organisers see cyclists, dam riffraff, only slightly higher than roller bladers. Was going to suggets you email them at to see if the offer still stands or if they might allow cyclists to ride over the bridge anyway. fb in sydnee |

Prior to that the Cycleway will be open for crossing the Bridge. To cater specially for cyclists, the event organisers have arranged an alternate crossing. This is a special water taxi service (with bike racks) that travels to Walsh Bay from the north side of the Bridge. This is a continuous, direct, free service operating during the closure period. Please note there may be a slight delay in crossing on Sunday 18 March between Noon and 11pm. Signage will be erected at the entrance to the Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway one week prior to the event advising of these arrangements. The Cycleway will be closed on the day to enable set up and execution of a special event. This is the inclusion in the day's celebrations of the first ever traditional Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony to cleanse the Harbour Bridge at sunset. --------------------- I am going to go for a late morning ride just for the harbour cruise, may never happen again. The extra climb out of Luna Park rather than coming off the bridge won't be welcome at the end of a long ride though. I guess descending down to the harbour instead of climbing up to the bridge on the south side will make up for it. C |
