Default [Syd] Wanted: Recommendation for metal fabrication workshop

I'll go as far as necessary to get this job done right, but the closer to
inner west the better. I'm looking for a place that somebody here has had
good results from.

The problem: There was a link posted here a few months ago, for a towbar-
mounted bike carrier from Hollywood Racks. I liked what I saw and ordered
one, but there is a problem with the towbar mounting. The towbar insert is
too small for safety, and the shim they supply to fix that issue is too
large to fit into the towbar. So I'm looking to get a shim customised for a
snug fit. I'm happy with the rack in all other respects, so I want to make
it work rather than hassling for a refund.

So what are you wanting to do? resize the shim or modify the insert?

Let me know and I'll try to point you in the right direction

Cheers

Geoff

The shim is heavy duty hard plastic - I'm a bit leery of shaving it, in
case it gets weakened. I had a closer look at the towing setup; the
inner dimensions of the towbar receiver are 4cm x 4cm, matching the
outer dimensions of the towbar insert. As it turns out, the *outer*
dimensions of the bike carrier insert match the *inner* dimensions of
the towbar insert. So I need to get a piece of 4cm x 4cm steel shank
that is the standard component of a towbar insert (do I need high
tensile?), and make a shim out of it. The main problem I can see is
getting the holes drilled very precisely in the shim so they match up
with the hole in the bike carrier insert. I don't have the equipment for
cutting pieces of metal such as I've described, nor the precision
drilling setup to make sure the holes match.

Have I described the problem sufficiently? Thinking about it, probably
any good towbar specialist should have the equipment needed. At the same
time, I'll need to get a demountable bracket made, to sit on the rack
and hold a mini numberplate.

Thanks for your reply.
