I am stone cold sober most of the time, except when I ain't. These
newsgroups do not require any brain power. Whatever messages come across my
monitor I can easily handle with one hand tied behind my back.

The main thing is not to take these newsgroups seriously. They are populated
by fools and charlatans. It is to my credit that I recognize this elemental
fact.

I am a wine lover. Unfortunately, I like wine too much. Once I start, I
can't stop. And so I have switched to god-awful grocery store beer.

Here is the iron law of life. If you like it, you can't have it. If you
don't like it, you can have all you want. In fact, go back for seconds. It
is good for you!

Even so, I think grocery store beer is better for you than soft drinks. I
see folks in the grocery store getting CASES of pop. Well, I like Coke too,
but it will give you diabetes. I do not need that on top of all my other
ailments.

Actually, I like him too. He really does have fun with his posts, and he
gets a lot of responses. I monitor only A-M-B, but it really is no longer
MTB related. He and Mike make the group interesting, but I'm positive they
have very different agendas. Mike has clearly stated his, but Ed's is
written between the lines.

The reason AMB ceased being a mountain bike forum is only partly because of
Mr. Vandeman. Yes, he was a gadfly I must admit, but how did that prevent
mountain bikers from posting messages which did not concern Mr. Vandeman.

It is easy to ignore messages on Usenet. For instance, I am presently
ignoring all the messages of TM on RBS because I have determined that he is
a poor crazy *******. In fact, he is a blithering idiot who only talks to
himself.

Do not blame Mr. Vandeman for what happened to AMB. If mountain bikers were
not so thin-skinned they could easily have worked around him.

I don't blame Mike or anyone for the "change" in this newsgroup. It simply
happened, as it has to numerous groups. Most newgroups are used for news
very infrequently now, and have become soapboxes for a relative few. Some
have become even less than that, relegated to a medium for fighting and
bitching between 2 parties! It is truly a special day when something
relevant or newsworthy is posted!!! In reality, when I want specific
information, news, etc, I will not look to usenet.

Yes, I came to your conclusion several years ago. It is impossible to have a
forum for discussion without a moderator.

I think when all of this (Usenet) was new, it was the newness that intrigued
us. Not that it is old, all the interest has gone out of it. It is now the
province of cranks and crackpots like TM. I always knew it would happen, but
it happened quicker than I thought it would.

In order to have a seminar on a subject, you have got to have a professor
presiding who will make everyone stay on subject. Otherwise, it is chaos. I
am convinced that anyone with any brains has long since left Usenet. You
will hardly ever find an intelligent post these days.

The problem with moderated forums for the general public is that they are
boring, boring, boring. We humans are basically groupies. We need to find
our own very small groups with whom we have a common interest and purpose.
When you invite everyone in, you destroy the group.
