The Guardian on fair-weather cyclists.

Are you a summer-orientated cyclist – or is cycling a way of life for you? Photograph: Barry Batchelor/PA It's that time of year once again when the streets are plagued with the cycle lane hogging, unsuitably attired, snail pace wobbling of the fair-weather cyclist. The bane of summer ... or are we? |

The bane of summer ... or are we? Flip-flops at the ready, a bag for each side of the handlebars and the darkest sunglasses I can find. (What? No mention of the Harley Davidsons that have come out of hibernation?) ;-) -- Come to Dave & Boris - your cycle security experts. |

Safety in numbers! possibly- if they didn't keep jumping over their handlebars every time they stopped. However, it'll get worse when they introduce velib type schemes... at the moment the fair weather folk actually have bikes, and so some of them have used one before, further they are responsible for the bike they are riding & don't tend to be _quite_ as reckless as on a rented one. A lot of these fair weather types have the supermarket special BSO or some rusty family heirloom, but when they get the pure lead of a velib between their legs steer well clear ... don't want one of them wobbling into you. |

The bane of summer ... or are we? Define unsuitably attired. Anything that doesn't get caught in things and keeps you at more or less the right temperature is fine by me. Far more important to have a bike that goes and stops properly, and a rider with the skill to know which of those to do when. The bane of summer ... or are we? I have become a fair-weather uncyclist . I'm off working at a site seven miles from home, somewhat uphill, where i have to turn up smart (although to some extent this is a self-imposed requirement). If the weather was a bit cooler, i could cycle, but with the heat and humidity (especially the humidity), there's no way i can do it and be presentable. Today was cooler; if it keeps going that way, i shall be back on the bike. tom -- Many CS algorithms become less useful when questions start getting answered with "maybe". -- Eric Sink |

the cycle lane hogging is "hogging" the same as "using"? unsuitably attired the only attire I've seen that I'd call unsuitable were some rediculously high heels. Guess what? Her feet kept falling off the pedals. snail pace wobbling of the fair-weather cyclist what's the big rush? |

Not being a high heel wearer I wouldn't have thought that they would be too bad. Surely the bit of the foot on the pedal is a wee bit more forward than where the heel is on such a shoe. -- Andy Leighton = "The Lord is my shepherd, but we still lost the sheep dog trials" - Robert Rankin, _They Came And Ate Us_ |

Platforms/wedges might be OK, but with regular heels the bit you want to put on the pedal is likely to be curved and sloping with no grip. Not that I've spent many long painful hours examining the merits of various different shoes with her indoors, or anything like that, you understand. Aaargh. 8:0 |
