He looks the type - "trailer trash".

That's a bit harsh. And "he" was a she anyway.

killed that vehicle's driver when it crashed into a truck."

FURTHER QUOTE: [Can't think WHY you left it out] Police in Tempe,
Ariz., say they're still investigating the incident and have not
yet assigned fault. But Tempe's police chief suggested that Uber
could be cleared of wrongdoing. "It's very clear it would have
been difficult to avoid this collision in any kind of mode
(autonomous or human-driven) based on how she came from the
shadows right into the roadway," the chief told the San Francisco
Chronicle. ENDQUOTE

so auto drive cannot see in the dark, fog etc.?? Sounds like the
end of self driven cars.

No worse than humans.

I agree, besides the smoke/dark concerns, there is always the chance
of one of the sensors packing up or acting strangely.

The only sensors humans have are two eyes (stuck in the middle of the
car) which can't be used to drive and look a mobile phone at the same
time. With more sensors (in better locations), a self driving car has
error detection and redundancy.

It has also been proved that the cars can be taken over wirelessly by
a dodgey tech wizzo at the side of a road to make it crash. Even a
small laser can affect the sensors.

'Self-driving cars are prone to hacks — and automakers are barely
talking about it'

It is a separate issue from teaching the cars how to drive.
