Default biking conditions in Moab in late Nov/early Dec?

Hiyall,

how are biking conditions in Moab in late Nov/early Dec?

we had planned on making the journey (about 20 hrs driving) leaving last
week of Nov and being gone for 2 weeks.

However, a friend recently passed along this info:

"
I hate to put a damper on the plans but I should pass
onb this warning. My brother-in-law who is a very
good mountain biker and lived in Utah for 4 years had
some things to say about mountain biking at Moab in
Nov. Basically he said don't do it.

He says it is very very cold and that we are likely to
find standing snow on the trails. He said it would be
wiser to go snowboarding.

Basically he said no one mountain bikes there at the
end of Nov. and that he would choose to go either in
the spring or next fall (Aug - Sept.).
"

any opinions/advice? would you agree with the recommendation to plan for
another time?

mucho thanks!
albert.

I went to Moab in the middle of summer, it was freakin hot, I saw maybe
4 other bikers. The LBS guys said winter is their busy time. Though
I've never been in the winter, so I don't know exactly which month he
meant.

It will either be really nice, or cold and snowy. From my experience, the
snow doesn't get very deep or last long around those parts, but being winter
you can't be too surprised if it's winter-like. I kind of like riding in
(somewhat - at least above 0 F) cold weather. You can hammer and not get too
hot, so if you can stand the cold and snow's not a problem it might be
really nice. The fact that nobody rides that time of year would make it that
much nicer if it's ridiable.

I was just there Monday/Tuesday. It was pretty cold, but dry. This
time of the year it's a roll of the dice. It could be stellar and it
could be crappy.

We cancelled our early Nov road trip to Moab and Fruita due to the weather
reports. If it woulda been dry, we'd have gone for sure. But the forecasts
were snow, showers, misery, so on to plans for Spring.

Yeah, the transporter on the Enterprise isn't working too well, & it hurts
to miss the riding and seeing your mug again. It's in the 50's and clear
as a bell here, too. Lotsa folks going out night riding after work.

It depends on how quick you are. I won't hesitate to drive 4 hours south
in the middle of Winter to ride Moab. But if you have to cough up a few
$hundred, fly across country, THEN drive 4 hours from SLC, it's very
iffy. Note that the drive itself can be horrible if you mis-time it
badly. The route hits 7000 feet and has caused at least one Winter
driving ordeal for me.

The big problem if the weather is pleasant (which it *usually* is), is
short days.

For alternate times, try February or early March. You still risk Winter
storms, but Spring starts early down there and the crowds don't show up
until April.

The snow storms usually only put the trails out of action for a day to
day+half.
