where are LBS rates $85/hr ?

No idea. They're usually around 60 CDN here.

What are salaries like at the LBS?

Around here, service is generally price-out on a per task basis, although River City does have what appears to be a $60 hour shop rate.

Based on these charges, I have save over a billion dollars in the last 40 years.

I think the last time I paid a shop for anything was 1975, although shops have done work on bikes that I purchased. I got a CK headset installed on a warranty replacement Cannondale frame free of charge (well done at River City), and they installed a Praxis Works BB30 conversion unit when I got another warranty replacement Cannondale frame. (I later removed that unit and pressed in BB30 bearings and some Wheels Mgf shims). There is stuff I don't have the tools to do (like frame prep), but I haven't had to prep a frame in decades. Most things can be done with a pocket tool. I couldn't imagine paying someone to wash my bike.

I've got a long-time friend, a brilliant ME who used to teach part time in my
program, who once had a hobby of framebuilding, doing beautiful, beautiful work.

He's moved on to other hobbies, but still has the frame prep tools. Several
times, I've biked the 1.5 miles to his house to borrow exotic tools. I've
told him several times, "Please don't throw these away. I'll buy them
whenever you want to sell them."

Sometimes is really is who you know.

If a stranger comes to me and ask me to fix a flat on a rear tire on a Dutch city bike with a full chain case with a gear hub and drum brakes for 10 euro I will tell him to look for someone else.

What if it was her and not him?
