snip PS first time I have seen anything nearing official advice NOT to wear headphones whilst riding (and no, of course they didnt mention joggers/walkers doing same ) I don't get that at all. I quite often ride with an MP3 player. Although I'm not likely to use it in heavy traffic. I don't see why it's any different to having music on in the car. -- Nick |

I thought I'd seen all the arguments.. but I don't recall this one. That's tops! I crank my system in the car (fully sick subwoofer mate!) but don't often ride with tunes on because I feel better without headphones on in traffic. I guess I use my ears a lot more whilst on the bike. "sounds like a vb commodore.. better get the birdy ready.." :-) hippy |

Are these maps downloadable anywhere?
"flyingdutch" wrote in message ... Yesterday i was pleasantly surprised to find (in the A3 section of my morning paper) a 4page liftout on: 'Melbournes's Bike Paths - Bayside' with 2 pages dedicated to Health, Safety, riding at night, in traffic and, on shared paths. The other 2 pages was detailed maps of the Pths stretching from Willie to Patterson River, with detailed maps of specific sections And today there is another one! Yarra-Dandenong. Same first 2 pages as yesterday and the other 2 pages are a large map of paths going from Patterson River up to near the 1/20 starting point. Seems to be funded by State Govt but unsure about that bit A few of the tips/photos are a bit dodgy (one of them is from a CM ride! ) but apart from that a great profile-raiser -- flyingdutch |

Bt like I said, ALL these maps wer sourced/done-in-conjunction-with BV and the railtrail org' originally... try these... http://www.bv.com.au/Content/Navigat.../Bike_maps.htm http://www.railtrails.org.au/states/vic -- flyingdutch |

Apple earbuds let in so much noise that haven't noticed any decreased awareness of surrounding traffic ( haven't been hit by anything either). I do use a Zefal rearview mirror -- ProfTournesol |

I haven't managed to get the Age once this week, and have only seen Thursday's, which was railtrails. What was in Wednesday's? I hadn't looked around the BV site before - there's a good range of maps there, but they're only really schematic. I know from experience how hard some of the city bike paths are to follow - many sections are not at all obvious, especially at connecting points. I assume the maps in the Age make it possible to ride them without having to repeatedly retrace your steps, as is normal on most peoples' first attempts. The BV site also alerted me to Melway map 592, which I've somehow never noticed before. It's a cleaned up version of those on the VicRoads site. So thanks again for that. I'm interested in all this because I know how good Melbourne's bike path network is, but think it's a shame that 99% of potential users have no idea about it. I know the die-hard cyclists, such as many of us on this group, use them, but countless people I've met have only ever ridden a short section of one trail, once or twice, without realising they could just as easily ride other nice places, or longer distances. |
