How can you possibly say such a thing? According to BHSI there are
only about a dozen people in the world who are opposed to the
compulsory use of helmets by all bicyclists.

Priapus is a Greek/Roman fertility god. Possibly Mr. Reuteler was
thinking of priapism, which is a male disorder that requires urgent
attention by an urologist?

When I was 19, I had a priapism. Now thirty years later, I could use an
urologist to get it back. Sorry, but you asked for it you got it, Toyota.

besides i'm pretty sure it's spelled priapus not prius.

Nope, Toyota Prius, been sold since 1997 in Japan.

"prius" is the neuter form of the Latin word "prior". The closest
translation would be "forerunner" but that term was already used...

How can you possibly say such a thing? According to BHSI there are
only about a dozen people in the world who are opposed to the
compulsory use of helmets by all bicyclists.

And all twelve of them will post the same argument on rec.bicycles.misc
about how h*lm*ts should be required for motor vehicle passengers
instead of cyclists.

My two VW TDIs get right at 50 mpg (NB) and well over 50 mpg from the
Jetta

Those are Diesel, are they not? If so, their emissions are
significantly higher than the Prius and Insight.

due to its better shape. Toy OT and HONDUH lie about their performance.

Actually, not. The US EPA mileage and emissions testing results
support those claims, and real-world people have said that they can
often beat the EPA mileages with those cars. They are very unusual in
that they actually get better mileage in town than on the highway.

I've some experience with the Prius and I don't think it lives up to its
claims. I can get better gas mileage from my Corolla than the Prius. In my
opinion, Hybrids are a joke. They promise only slightly better mileage than
same sized gasoline powered cars yet don't even deliver what they claim.
Also, they are more complex and expensive to maintain. Wait, because far
superior technologies are just around the corner. Diesels are not a bad
temporary solution and they emit almost no greenhouse gases. Their only
problem is that they emit carcinogenic soot into the air.

I guess that depends on your definition of "almost no".

Checking a diesel Jetta vs. a gas version I find the annual greenhouse gas
emissions are 5.1 tons vs. 7.2 tons.

More than a minor issue, IMHO.

How true those words are, even today.

Apropos of nothing much I asked them why they are still quoting
Thompson, Rivara and Thompson's original 85% figure when they
published a revision in 1996 putting them in line with the rest of the
liddites at about 2/3. The response was:

"We are aware of the second study, but by the time it appeared the 85%
figure was so deeply ingrained in the injury prevention community that
a change will not be helpful. I regard any similar numbers published
in those or other studies as approximations anyway. Over the years
observation of who gets head-injured and who does not seems to support
the 85% number. So we have left it up that way. We do have references
to the later study for those who need more."

I read this as "we're going to keep using the wrong figure because
otherwise it'll show up everybody else who is also still using the
wrong figure."
