Erie Canal
Has anyone had experience with the Erie Canal Heritage trail. My wife and I
may try it this fall. We are in our 60's and prefer level land. Are there accommodations in the area? Thanks, Jim |

I rode a small piece of it this past summer, starting around the Rochester
area. Nice ride, but like most rail-trail-type paths, there's not a lot to see between little towns. Check my site at www.geocities.com/NYRides for a little more detail. We rode the Erie Canal Trail from Tonowanda to Albany this past summer. The
best part of the trail is from Brockport to west of Syracuse. In general, the trail is very flat except at the locks, where you may have steps or a steep side trail. If you don't stay on the trail, NY Bike Route 5, which runs along much of the canal, is generally a good alternative. Most towns along the canal have motels, hotels, and B&Bs. There is limited camping along the canal. A good guide book that we used is "Erie Canal Bicyclist & Hiker Tour Guide, 2nd Edition, 2004 Revision" by Harvey Botzman (http://www.cyclotour.com) "Jim & Meg" wrote in message news:NYMRd.52146$EG1.32611@lakeread04...
