And surprisingly tough. Well, unless a wheel reflector comes loose,
that is:

And squirrels are a known "issue".

(just made my own "wheel reflectors" from Scotchlite tape because I
couldn't bring myself to put those things on my wheels)
Forgot to add, is anyone ever going to make a reflector that meets CPSC
requirements but doesn't a) look like a pie plate on a fixie and b)
isn't flimsy as all get out, making one fear an incident like Andy
posted unless you remove them as soon as you get home from the bike shop?

Just put some Scotchlite tape bits on your rims.

That's exactly what I did, just wondered if that or something similar
was ever going to be an OEM "solution" to those clunky pieces of plastic.

Reflective tire sidewalls - I think they're even mandated in some
places.

For good reason--they're the most effective be-seen solution for bikes
if you aren't looking at them perfectly head or tail on. Blew my mind
when I first saw them outside at Schipol in Amsterdam. All these white
glowing circles going to and fro in the dawn. Very cool.
