Default Man jailed after hit and run which left cyclist with life-changing injuries

Driver sent to prison.
QUOTE:
A careless driver who ploughed in to a cyclist before driving off and leaving him with life-changing injuries is today starting an eight-month jail term.

Keaton Richards was driving his black Seat Leon over the bridge on Wood Street in Cardiff city centre at around 11.20pm on August 22, when he was in collision with a cyclist.

Panicking, the 23-year-old and his passenger left the scene, abandoning the car on Sevenoaks Road, before returning home and reporting the car stolen.

When interviewed by police Richards denied being the driver of the car at the time of the collision, insisting the vehicle had been stolen previously.

Two days later, he admitted his original account was a lie and made full admissions about his involvement. (OH DEAR - SM)

He was charged with careless driving, failing to stop following a collision, and perverting the course of justice.

He was today sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment and given a 16-month driving ban.

Detective Sergeant Huw O’Connell from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This case has had a devastating impact on everyone concerned.

“The victim sustained serious brain injuries as a result of the collision, injuries which saw him hospitalised for five months where he underwent numerous surgeries, and which have changed his life forever.

“I have no doubt that Keaton Richards did not set out that evening to injure anyone, but I cannot stress enough how lethal a vehicle can be if due consideration and care is not shown at all times.

He undoubtedly panicked that evening, but his first reaction should have been to remain at the scene and assist the pedestrian (SIC) to ensure he received the care he needed as quickly as possible.

“I sincerely hope Keaton Richards uses his time in custody wisely, reflecting on his actions, and I hope that if he does choose to drive again following his driving ban, he does so with the utmost caution.

“This case should also serve as a stark warning to all motorists that losing concentration, if only for seconds, can have catastrophic consequences.”

ENDS
Plenty of jail time to reflect on his crimes indeed.

Eight months for actively perverting the course of justice seems
reasonable enough.

If he'd only had the common sense to stay at the scene and behave
responsibly and truthfully... who knows...? There might have been no
charges at all.
