May is National Bike Month

The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week from May
17th - 21st and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 21st.

For Bike to Work Week 2004, the League is proud to partner with Shimano
American Corporation and Rodale .

Bicycling is part of the solution to many of our nation’s problems: the
obesity epidemic, traffic congestion, air pollution and more. Some 64% of
adults and over 15% of kids are overweight today, resulting in 300,000
premature deaths and a cost to society of $117 billion a year. Over 22% of
all motor vehicle trips Americans take are less than one mile long, and 50%
of the working population commutes five miles or less to work, an easily
bikeable distance. If the average person biked to work or shopping once
every two weeks instead of driving, we could prevent the pollution of close
to one billion gallons of gasoline from entering the atmosphere every year.
The League of American Bicyclists’ new television and radio PSA campaign
uses humor and the element of surprise to encourage Americans to visit
www.bike-to-work.com and bike to work instead of driving. The League
promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation, and works for a
bicycle-friendly America.

For me, Bike to Work Week was a nice concept - when I had a job :-(

careful what you wish for. the only thing worse than having a job is needing
one. i was actually quite happy during my 2002 unemployment season. went
touring across the USA, visited the relatives in australia, hung out with
friends all over the place. that severance check helped a lot, tho. good
luck. jobless recovery indeed.

Our Bike Month is June.

Some events even get media attention in Vancouver.
World Naked Bicycle Ride, June 12th is sure to be one of 'em.

Don't say you've nothing to wear.

I find that if I ride without padded shorts -- just wearing tights, let's
say -- I find that the ride is considerably less comfortable. Would I be
tossed out of this ride if I wore simply shorts and SPD shoes?

There's an unwritten "bare as you dare" clause. Besides they're
generally short rides. I opt for shoes, gloves, and some paint. Maybe
a mask if there's going to be TV crews. And of course a helmet to
avoid the obvious fine if things get weird.
