Default Covered Bridge Ride in IN

The first Saturday in May is the time for the Billie Creek Village
Covered Bridge Bike Ride in Parke County. On May 6, 2006 the weather
was very pleasant. What I found most pleasing was at Bridgeton,
Indiana. Public spirited citizens were donating time, effort, and
equipment to rebuilding the Bridgeton Covered Bridge that was so
thoughtlessly destroyed by arson last year. Three special saws were
cutting large tree trunks into dimensional lumber for replacing the
bridge. More people are being recruited. The pioneer spirit that
built Parke County has not died.

It's good to hear that your area is pitching in to repair the damage. We
have had arson problems here in Pennsylvania as well. Recently, Knecht's
Bridge in the Saucon Valley was burned. I believe they arrested someone
for the arson. This bridge was repaired (I don't know by whom), but there
are others that have been replaced by modern, soulless concrete bridges.

It seems a worse vandalism to burn a bridge than a house or barn. These
bridges are irreplaceable, and are part of our history.
