Recommendations for 700c touring wheels/rims?
Hi there
Rear rim on the ultra galaxy has split around a couple of the spoke nipples, but rims were virtually knackered anyways. I'm after a decent set of wheels, good quality etc, strong, preferably with non-squeal rims... uses include heavily laden touring and some rough tracks (canal towpath/bridleways/forest tracks). What's the jury think? Thanks in advance, Tim -- Sent from Birmingham, UK... What's the jury think? I've got 36 hole Mavic 317 rims laced onto Deore hubs using plaine gauge 13g spokes. Not let me down sin their acquisition. As for non squeal rims - you will search forever :-) You can try Koolstop Salmon break blocks though. They're vey good. Contach SpaScycles www.spacycles.co.uk for some sound advice and reasonable prices. -=V=- |

What's the jury think? I am using DRC ST19 on my tourer. £23 from Withington Cycles. Using a SON on the front Ultegra hub on the back. Used the front for over a year and is wearing well, rear is newer. Mavic A719s look good for the job too but more expensive. |

Just my experience - buy a new 'shop wheel', use it for your tour and
adopt the attitude as long as it lasts this tour money well spent. The 'shop wheel' on my tourer has lasted some 4 years without one broken spoke. Again my experience is that once spokes start to break the integrity of the wheel is lost and it becomes more trouble than it is worth. |

Any rim can squeal with rim brakes. uses include heavily laden touring and some rough tracks (canal towpath/bridleways/forest tracks). What's the jury think? Mavic A719 or similar. ~PB |

Kool stop salmons, Clarke, Shimano, BBB, Fibrax - only Avid originals gave any kind of peace although their performance was pants in the wet. I've pored over Sheldons advice (toed in, toed out), buggered with the spacers and attack angle and cleaned the rim with all kinds of spirits. My conviction that the original Rigida Nova rims were pants was vindicated by the back one turning to cheese. I approached not-so-local but highly decent LBS[1] who're going to build me up a new set of wheels based on Mavic a719s - freindly bike doctor showed me a cross section of one and they look good to me.
