I get -

"road tax" site:uk about 14,000,000
"road tax" site:gov.uk about 66,700
"car tax" site:uk about 4,300,000
"car tax" site:gov.uk about 39,300

Not forgetting:
"vehicle excise duty" site:gov.uk about 97,900

Guy

Oh - as few as that.

Thank you for making the point.

The point that there are c.50% more references for "vehicle excise
duty" than for "road tax" ?

You missed off "on gov.uk sites"

Whereas there are 14 million for "road tax" on all uk sites.

Road tax is the colloquial term which is used much, much more than VED in the
uk.

Porky reckons that cyclists are not obsessed by the name VED rather than Road
Tax: I wonder why this thread is running.

We were about to embark at Dover, when
(Charles Ellson) came up to me and whispered:

If demanded, you must
remove it from private land by the shortest route.

That's easy - pick it up and carry it. It has then been removed from the
land.

That's a bit like saying that if you jack your car up it can't be ticketed

However stupid, a bicycle *can* legally be carried through a red
traffic light, but not pushed or ridden.

(Yes, I know).

You pay the tax that a lot of people refer to as Road Tax. Just because you
don't call it that doesn't mean you don't pay it.

Indeed.

It's a tax paid for using certain things on roads. It is therefore a
road tax. Its official name is Vehicle Excise Duty, but that doesn't
stop it being a road tax.

Do you also encourage the abolition of free road tax for certain
types of low-pollution motor car?

If not, please justify why cyclists should have to pay while drivers
of such cars should not.

If there was no tax on petrol you may have a point; there is and you
don't.

All car drivers who use the roads are contributing to the costs directly
be VED
and tax on their petrol.

Cyclists who use the roads contribute nothing directly.

They pay 20% VAT on their Lycra......

Doubt it - that hasn't existed since the 1930's

Slightly pedantic in that something similar exists, albeit into
general taxation and instead called Vehicle Excise Duty.

But based on emissions. A cyclist pays exactly the same rate of VED as
any other low / zero emission vehicle.

Clever. ;-)

All we need now is to get them have number plates and compulsory
insurance and submit their vehicles to annual MOTs, and of course take
a driving test, and they will become accepted members of society.

They already are.
Drivers of motor vehicles are the ones who need to be licensed.
Even dogs are exempt from that now!

Some of the dogs who drive around in Millbrook are licensed.
Not many, though.

Sorry - you are right.

I think that there is no tax on haemorrhoid cream though.

Food provides energy to propel a bicycle. VAT is charged on some of
it.
