"Woods, however, was unique -- a globally recognized brand name that
evoked impeccability and historical greatness. His sponsors and
handlers, his admiring chroniclers in the media, and especially Woods
himself contributed to the image-making.

''The public had become jaded and indifferent -- they expected Barry
Bonds and Marion Jones and Sammy Sosa to fall,'' said psychologist
Stanley Teitelbaum, author of ''Sports Heroes, Fallen Idols.''

''But no one really expected that of Tiger Woods,'' he said. ''Now that
it happens to him, people are not as indifferent -- there's more
disappointment and more disillusionment.''

Steve Elling, senior writer for CBSSports.com, wrote this week that fans
and sportswriters, himself included, were gullible in placing Woods on
so high a pedestal.

''We have learned by now to invest admiration in public figures with a
grain of salt. With Woods, we just ate the whole salt lick,'' Elling
wrote. ''Say it with me: Never, ever again.''"

People build athletes up to be perfect at all things because they're
(nearly) perfect at one thing. Anyone who assumes *that* deserves to be let
down.

The very things that makes successful professional athletes so successful
are the same things that make their marriages fail. Marriage is not a
competition, it's a compromise. Why is anyone surprised this happened to
Woods?

Steve Elling, senior writer for CBSSports.com,

Speak for yourself, Steve Elling, you media butt
muncher. _I_ knew before he turned professional that
Woods was always ready to chase a skirt. I recognized
the big money image constructed for Tiger Woods by you
and other pimps, and never invested a bit of emotion in
it. Too bad he will not replace or ever stand next to
Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, and
Jack Nicklaus. All that work ... and now he will be
compared with John Daly.

He's the one who even fatter than the rest of the paunchy golfers ?

Given the number of fat golf pros I'd have thought golf would have taken
over as the US national sport.
