Alternatively, why are some bicycles so cheap? Edinburgh cycles sell
some astoundingly good value bikes, for example their Revolution
Trailfinder '14 at Ł269
http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/prod...r-hybrid-bikes

Its horses for courses. I like the fact that cheap good bikes are
available ,as are bikes which are rich-folks play things. Indeed we
should be glad that some people are prepared to pay these huge sums. If
the rich are involved then the planners are more likely to take notice
and build the cycle facilities that we all need.

if you buy off season with online sales....January/February...and during an economic downturn, before Christmas/late fall

a good steel frame/aluminum, with Deore components. quality saddle (100) rims and tires (40) with spare,s is possible at $1600 or less.

The man doesn't know prices, and also carefully ignores MTBs even though
their prices will significantly affect data.

"Grassroots club cyclists now often air the gripe that their sport is
becoming the new golf, its "working class" soul squeezed out by an
executive breed whose ability on the bike often doesn't compare to the
price tag of the machine they're riding"

Translation - a couple of old farts are doing what they've always done,
complain about people getting expensive kit. That's been going on since
the beginning of time.

88888888888888888

for an 8 speed ...I think of 8 speeds, world class components: 8 speeds $35 tires $100 saddle quality lubricants.

well maintained running costs for that category in a clean road gping environment prob $300/5000 miles with a rebuild consideration at 8-10K miles for cable/housings/rims/hubs

I the author believe that he is an idiot IMO. A decent racing bike is between 1200 and 1600 euro. For 4200 euro as I showed in one of the pictures of my visit to Rose Biketown you have a Campy Super Record equipped roadbike with a 800 gr CF fram. Total weight of that bike is 6.8 kg or even less. That is not what I call a 'decent' road bike, that is an 'uber bike'.

You can get a very good Al frame road bike like a Specialized Allez for
around 1000 CA. You can get a Specialized Elite or Roubaix full CF for
around $2000.

Then you can upgrade the wheels, the group etc. :-)

So they only want 18% more than a Bianchi:

And no Italian styling.

There you go. Another example. Funny but you have trouble finding a
Bianchi here in Montreal. I looked before I bought my Tarmac.

There are some guys in my club that spout that nonsense about needing to
spend 6 large for a road bike. I don't usually ride with them anyway...

For your reference, records indicate that

And, really, if the case were that the people with expensive bike had
lower ability, why whine about it when you could trash talk them? Saying
something like “You spent $6K on that and you *still* can’t keep up?” is
going to be a lot more effective than crying in front of the world.

But I think it’s more likely the case that the “grassroots” people are
the ones who are the slowpokes. Rather than admit to themselves that it
might be because they’re getting old, they blame the fancy new bikes
that the younger people are buying. The solution is the same as the
above: call them out on it. Trade bikes for a day, or however long it
takes to convince grandpa that the problem lies in the engine, not the
chassis.
