SRAM PC58 - Campy Chorus 8 Speed Question

I have been using SRAM (ex-Sachs) PC-58 chains with my Campagnolo Chorus 8
speed group for the past six years. I have always found the PC-58 to be a
great match with this group.

According to my odometer (1200 miles on the chain) and my Park Chain tool,
it is time replace my chain. The new PC-58 that I installed was very
noisy.... it makes a grinding sound... especially when I am exerting a lot
of force on the pedals. I replaced the cassette with a new one... same
grinding sound. I purchased another PC-58 chain.... same grinding sound
with the old and new cassette. In the end, I put the original (and worn)
chain back on the bike. It works fine (no grinding sound) with both the old
and new cassette.

Has SRAM made a change to the PC-58? (Seems unlikely). Can anyone
recommend a chain for a Campy 8-speed group?

I had the same experience and put on after years a Shimano chain again.

That grinding sound is likely due to a small mismatch in pitch betwixt
(thanks, Sheldon!) chain and sprockets. It doesn't happen with the old
chain because it is worn to a similar extent as your sprockets.

Now you will have to make the decision on whether to live with it or
replace your cassette. Examine the teeth and compare to new ones.

The PC-58 is an excellent choice.

Good point... that is exactly what is occurring. Funny thing is.... I _did_
change the cassette with a new Campy Record cassette and still have the
grinding noise.

My SACHS 9s chain makes three suprosingly noisy SACHS chains. I
replaced the SACHS with a Shimano, all was silent. I put the SACHS on
another bike, and it sounds noisy again. I lubed the SACHS, still
niosy. I was wondering if was just me, but I think I'll try another
Shimano.

The chainrings could be worn as well.

Best to check also that one or more of your rings aren't worn. The clue
is that the noise gets worse when you exert pressure, and that you get
the noise with a new chain and new cassette; and that it goes away when
you put the old chain on with either new or old cassette.

Had this problem of grinding when pedaling out of the saddle after
installing a new Ultegra 8 cassette and Sachs chain, inner ring was a
goner. I've used SRAM/Sachs/Sedis chains for years, 1200 miles seems
kind of early to pull a chain but the tape measure doesn't lie.
