Crazy video of Lake waves taking out cyclists/runners in Chicago. You
might want to watch this video.

Maybe this sounds nit-pickish, but there was nothing huge about
those waves.

It was just that the water level was very high and the waves,
such as they were, were slipping over the barrier and on to the
bikeway.

Typical sensationalistic, misleading journalism - also a missed
chance at education: the idea that it does not take that much
moving water to cause significant problems, as in a car driving
into a flooded roadway and being swept away by 18" of moving
water.

The water level was high because of wave action. The wind had been
pushing water into the chicago coast for a day or so, which forces
water up onto the beaches. It doesn't take much water rise to flood
the beaches (particularly between North and Oak street, which is where
that video (or at least, the ones I've watched) was filmed.), and move
the waves the lakes hore path.

Rip tides at many beaches are actually dangerous,
rather than simply providing amusement for spectators.
Every few years somebody dies at Ocean Beach in
San Francisco. Seven people died in 1998, but
that is anomalous. The rate would be much higher
except that the cold water discourages casual swimmers.

Lest you think I am taking the moral high ground,
Golden Gate bridge jumpers are a continual source of
morbid amusement for us in these here parts. Several
years ago the local fishwrap stopped playing up the
stories and giving the ordinal number for the latest.

Usually the impact with the water surface
incapacitates the jumper, then the cold
current carries him out to sea.

Here the cyclist remained high and dry.
