Nice stuff. Beautiful photos, old and new, of the Tour de France and
people/places surrounding. Dont care for the music, but, hey...

Leth directed this amazing film about 1976 Paris/Robaix (which none of you
guys have seen?).

Yes, own the DVD, but not willing to call it 'great'. The lead-in was
more interesting than the race, which is done better in practically
every no-nonsense WCP production. If I were to choose which to watch,
I probably would grab any of the WCP classics over "A Sunday in Hell'.

I would almost kill for a WCP version of the real thing from those
years, say 1974 - 1985. Guess I just don't get contrived drama when
the real thing is, well, the real thing.

And as much as I like EM, watching him wrap his handlebars has a
limited pay-off. I betcha he makes sure the wrap is done well on his
production bikes, though.

If I'm not going to watch a real race, the Anquetil and Coppi bio DVDs
are more interesting to me - even if the Coppi one seems to lose its
place at times (maybe of I understood the Italian, rather than
following the translations).

Anyway, if I'm going to try to spin for an hour, I'll watch the WCP
P-R from last year over ASIH.

On 24-Jul-2006, smacked up and reeling, blindly
formulated
the following incoherence:

Ill bet most of you guys have seen "A Sunday in Hell".

I tend to think of ASiH as a cycling film more for film buffs than cycling
fans. In fact, the intended audience for this post was a film NG. No
response over there as of yet.

The film shows reverence for the sport, almost as if it's a religious
experience, but at the same time it has an objective tone. It puts you in
the moment..all aspects of he moment...without attempting to inflame
passions. The opening is quiet and reflective...the mechanic tunes up...
the massages... the cyclists riding to the start in the cool air of early
morning. Then we're immersed in the pageantry of the sign in and race
start. There's the wonderful scene where we sit by the road and watch the
early breakaway approach from the distance. Eventually the film explodes
with the action on the pave. And finally the finishing sprint, the podium,
and the cyclist shower up. It's a beautiful film even if you've never heard
of cycling. It shows the many faces and facets of cycling...the beauty,
danger, politics, commerciality, participants, and spectators.

I wish more film buffs knew about it. It seems so few do.
