I live in WP and have visited the shop maybe half a dozen times over the
years. I'm quite unimpressed and take my business elsewhere. In all my
visits only one time has an employee asked to help me. But maybe it's just
me. They've been there a long time (10 years?) so somebody must be happy.

My wife and I both purchased new bikes from them last year. Harlan
fitted us well and we are happy with the service and purchase. If you
are a Westchester Cycle Club member, he offers a 10% discount.

I bought my Kreitler rollers from them. They were very helpful in getting me
a loaner for 2 weeks free of charge to evaluate whether this is really what
I wanted. They also match prices from mail-order companies. I like the store
and the people working there. However, I haven't been back, because the the
Yorktown and Mt Kisco stores are closer to where I live.

High Caliper is a good bike shop. I have bought two bikes from them, a Bianchi
and a Litespeed. I was fit well and they worked with me after the sale to fine
tune my fit. The staff is appropriately solicitous and usually knowledgeable.
If you buy a bike there, they try and take care of you. I have certainly been
taken care of there. One of the partners left about a year ago. I get the
sense that Harlan, the remaining partner, is stretched a little bit thin. Two
of my friends have had the experience where they dropped their bikes off for
service and had much more work being done on them than they expected, without
it being cleared in advance. My only real complaint is that they are no longer
open on Sundays, which makes riding on the weekend and getting your bike
serviced mutually exclusive. I would be comfortable buying another bike from
Harlan.

The alternatives in Westchester a

Bicycle World: In Mount Kisco. Some good brands - Trek, Moots, Calfee. The
service is good. I have 4 or 5 friends that swear by the Calfees that they
bought there. It's a bit far from lower Westchester.

Sierra Cycles: Small bike shop in Scarsdale. Nice people working there, but
small. Not a lot of depth, but they can get stuff. I love their Nike dri-fit
bibs. I have started to get my bike serviced there because they are open on
Sundays. If I was in the market for a bike, I would consider buying one there.
Francisco, the guy that runs the shop, is lovely. I don't know what he does
or doesn't know about fitting. I don't know anybody that has bought a bike
there. They are owned by the same people who own Julio's, in Chappaqua. I
have never been to Julio's

Hickory and Tweed. Armonk. Don't know much about them.

Danny's Cycles: Scarsdale. Danny's is the place where kids get their bikes
and adults get their hybrids and comfort bikes. Although they are Trek,
Cannondale, etc... dealers, I don't know of any serious road or mountain bikers
among my friends who buy bikes there. I periodically buy accessories there,
like Trek lights (love the disco light) and Pearl Izumi gloves.

Pelham Cycles: In Pelham. Supposedly a good shop, but I haven't been there.

Hope this helps

Joel Solomon
