is a piece of PR puff about the police using the rather heavy Segway
things in a shopping centre.

I wonder what the police would say about someone, including
themselves, using a rather lighter bike to ride round the shopping
centre at up to 12mph?

The article says "It also acts as an ice-breaker gaining visible
interest from members of the public, thereby increasing interaction
with security and police officers".

It would be much more fun if they used horses.

Probably that it's dangerous.

Didn't seem to cause any problems in whichever US airport I saw cycloplods
in (can't remember whether it was Denver or San Francisco).

At least you'd hear a horse approaching at speed.
Might be a problem cornering on polished marble floors though!

I think the effect of the horses lack of bladder control on the marble
will (dis) solve that

I see Disney decided they were too dangerous to use in their park.

As opposed to one of those lightweight 'bike things'? They may be heavy but
they are extremely manoeuvrable to get around things quickly - can a bike
turn on its own axis while being ridden by the average cyclist? As far as
weight is concerned, aside from the effects of inertia, the only other
factor I can think of that's relevant is what damage would it would cause if
it runs over something e.g. a foot. The contact area or footprint of the
tyres is then relevant and although the Segway itself is heavier than the
average bike, once the riders weight is also included, I think the tyres
would be under less stress and cause less impact damage than a comparatively
'stiletto like' skinny bike tyre.

I wonder what the police would say about someone, including

Probably that it has nowhere near as small a footprint and nowhere near the
controllability or manoeuvrability of a Segway. Also that the public riders
may not have received specialist bike training, all going together to paint
a picture that cycling around the shopping centre would be far more risky -
and they'd be right.

Enthusiasm for cycling won't be gained by knocking other devices that can be
used for personal transport. Bikes have their place but that's not being
ridden through shopping centres IMO.

Paul
