SL-BS77 barend Shifters

I was reading that these barend shifters can shift both 9 speed and 8
speed cassettes in index mode. Is this true

I don't think so. 7 and 8 are often close enough that 8 shifters will
shift 7 cassettes. but 9 has a narrower spacing.

With a DA 8s rear derailleur, last made in 1996, these will shift 8s
spacing. On all other shimano rear derailleurs, they shift 9s spacing.

....unless one uses the alternative cable position, though I'm not
sure if current Shimano raoad derailleurs are still designed that way.
