Drop the word "according", which makes it sound like
I was trying to be an arbiter of taste in general.
I only meant that it was aesthetically pleasing to me.

Hell, Tom, only a few weeks ago you were identifying typefaces; that's
definitely an activity much indulged by taste-formers. You're being
far too modest. g

Let's just say that the bare cable between stops is part of the racer
aesthetic, with which you appear to agree and which I find
unimaginative and grim, like the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris or a
flat cap.

You got the EXT klickbox, right?

No I have the internal one. No big deal either. I don't lose any sleep
over it. I can't believe that changing cables is a showstopper for
anyone. The must be another reason.

Me too, I have both. *Now having two Rohloffs, one Afline and a
deraileur set up I'd say the Alfine in the most finicky because the
cable has to be *exactly* right. *The Rohloffs you can have some slack
and they stiil work, the deraileur has to be *exactly* right but is
easy to adjust.

Not much in it, although I haven't done any miles on the Alfine, so
it's only setup. *

Though I do it all the time as it is all I have for reference, it's
both unfair and futile to compare the Rohloff and the Shimano hub gear
boxes. Something like comparing a Mack Truck to a Volvo Estate: both
are carriers but one is intended to run for a million miles and bugger
the crudeness, while the other is very refined but will see only a
tenth of the mileage. Those of us who've bought both must represent a
very small part of the market for either. -- Andre Jute

And so far the Rohloffs have needed less buggering
about with than the deraileur.

Oh, and I have been down the beer garden

You could have to change cables at 30,000 kilometres! Oh, tragedy! Oh,
woe! LOL. -- AJ
