Just wondering if anyone has experience of these either good or bad?

Without knowing the weight, I'd steer clear.

I'd be inclined to steer clear in any case. I remember watching a TV
prog once on an advanced driving course given by racing and rally
drivers. Point #1 was "a good car with bad tyres is a bad car", and I
think the same will go for bikes. Spend a few more pennies and you can
have something Serious from Vredestein, Schwalbe, Michelin, Specialized
etc. which almost certainly *will* do a better job. And "better job"
from a tyre means potentially safer, faster, less punctures, longer
lasting and better handling. Saving a tenner (or even two) on them just
strikes me as a clear false economy.

Pete.

In my experience, such as it is High Gear products are not at all bad for
the price. Example having run my Giant ATB using good quality Michelin's
that have proved to be useless, compared to my Marin that has cheap yes Hi
Gears fitted when used in muddy conditions. As for weight hell what is a few
grams compared to the average weight of an average rider.

I've not tried them but I can tell from the tread pattern that they
wouldn't be very good on road, if that's what you want to use them for.
Better would be Schwalbe City Jet @ £23.99 inc tubes & postage from
www.wiggle.co.uk

Note that Hi Gear is a "rebrand" name, not a manufacturer as such. I've
seen certain seemingly identical products (including inner tubes)
rebranded with various names, including Hi Gear.

I've had a failure with a Hi Gear inner tube at the valve bonding. But to
be fair, that's something that can happen with expensive brands as well
sometimes.

I agree - I've no direct experience with this particular product, but Hi
Gear equipment is usually reliable, if a bit basic. I suspect it depends
what you want to use these tyres for, but if it's just for hacking about,
I'd give them a try.

In which case why mention it?

I have used several hundred Hi Gear inner tubes with no problems.

They may not be crap at all. But I would be very wary. You can get
perfectly good name brand tyres from your LBS for not much more.

Weight is one of the first priorities for a cyclist anywhere but Holland
and Leicestershire (and other very very flat places). And weight in the
tyres is the worst place to have it because it adds to the rotating
mass, affecting acceleration, braking and handling.
