Canadian, Sam Whittingham, is World's Fastest Recumbent Rider on aCustom 'Bent
If it wasn't for a short article in Reader's Digest, I don't think
many people in Canada would know about it. I knew he was fast but today I found out he set the current record at 130.5 km hr as stated in the R.D. article. Nice bunch of pictures. With a trike using that type of body shell and some reasonable gearing (for the older crowd) it could be a great vehicle to get around town, or get around the suburbs. The body shell almost speaks of a glider without wings. I wonder how that shape would work on glider, or an automobile for that matter. |

You should do a google search for velomobiles, which are enclosed trikes (usually with 3 wheel suspension) that do make practical and fast commuter machines. Expect to pay $8 to $12 kilo bucks. Sam's Varna is quite narrow, several inches narrower than Sam himself, but comfort is a sacrifice to be made for world record speed. You might also pay a visit to www.recumbents.com to learn more about the world of recumbents, both commuter and competition styles. gotbent, aka FRT rider. |

For Some Values of "that type of body shell". The Varna is a completely impractical vehicle for anything except what it's used for (speed records), but if you just mean "an enclosed shell" then as gotbent says, look for velomobiles. http://en.velomobiel.nl/ might give you some ideas. The body shell almost speaks of a glider without wings. I wonder how that shape would work on glider, or an automobile for that matter. Different jobs. Gliders need to think about lift, sports cars about down-force, so while quite possibly a good start for either you'd need to do some tweaking in either case.
