If they're the ones which mount independently from the drop levers, on the

as you note rather better).

Could I install these on my Novara Randoneee?

If yes....have a link to em?

I'd guess so.

Various flavours available, including

Cane Creek Crosstops

Tektro RL720

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetai...dID=5360027557

and others.

I've given a link to a supplier over here coz I don't know the leftpondian
retail scene terribly well - they can't be too hard to find though.

cheers,
clive

Ok thanks!

But would you ADVISE using and installing hem?

What do most think of them?

I do feel a bit unsafe with only the main brake levers
on my Randonee as traffic a bit worrisome in town.

Sorry to ask so many dumb question but I'm gearing up
for my first tour ever this summer... and safety is a
priority

Personally I've not got them - see no need for it for my use, and there is
the problem that I normally have a bar bag, which could get in the way
(dunno, I've not tried).

I've not heard bad things about them as far as the actual braking goes -
they're simple and they work.

If I were spending a lot of time on the tops and wanted decent braking from
there, I'd probably get some.

cheers,
clive

Hi again,

well I'm the proud (hopefully) owner of a new (well, to me) bike. PO
did one thing that I didn't like, he replaced the stock cantis with
direct pulls, makes for a hell of what I would call "pedal ratio" (from
an automotive standpoint) but I can bottom out the levers (haven't tried
it while riding yet, obviously, but still, not good.) I see I can get a
set of Tektro Oryx (what the bike originally came with) cantis on eBay
for about $25, so I can obviously do that, any other recommends? Or
would it be better to stick with the v-brakes and change my brake
levers? That would add some complications as the brake levers are the
Shimano ones that you flick to shift gears. It's got a Tiagra front and
105 rear derailleur if that makes any difference.

I'm tempted to just buy the center pull cantilevers and be done with it,
but am wondering if anyone else has any suggestions for an "upgrade."

Are you sure your brakes, especially the cables, are corectly adjusted?

Nope - actually the original provisions for fine tuning were
apparently in the suicide levers, which were removed (yes, I did leave
out a little info. in my previous post.) PO apparently adjusted them
so you could just barely disengage the noodles, but that leaves them a
little looser than I'd like for actual riding.

"suicide levers"?

What are suicide levers?

I installed them on my old drop bar commuter a couple years ago. They
work perfectly. Clive wondered about handlebar bag clearance, but I
have no trouble at all. My handlebar bag hangs from a rack that holds
it about 2.5" forward of the handlebars, and that's plenty of room for
these brake levers. In fact, 1.5" would have been sufficient.

I do feel a bit unsafe with only the main brake levers
on my Randonee as traffic a bit worrisome in town.

Hmm. Whatever the issue is there, you should resolve it independent
of the auxiliary (or "interruptor") brake levers. I do lots of city
riding on bikes with only standard levers, with no worries.

So, are your standard levers too much of a reach? If so, you could
explore using a stem with less forward reach, or more rise. But you
should definitely be comfortable riding with your hands on the hoods,
so you've got instant braking when you need it.

IME, if you're properly aware and riding correctly, heavy braking is a
very rare thing. Yes, you need the brakes to do that when necessary -
but if it's necessary, you probably caused it by some error in
judgment.

On average, cycling is already extremely safe. If you want to make it
even safer, its better to work on improving riding knowledge and
judgment - traffic skills and the like - rather than fine details of
equipment.

Why are they known as "suicide" levers? I had some like that on a
bike and never had any trouble with them.
