Of course he was a fake. It seems to me the Landis bust started this
whole domino effect that now has taken down all the tdf winners going
back to LeMond the last legitimate winner to a whole continent of
athletes that of Australia.

Yeah but they won't, cycling's being nailed while the other equally
doped-up sports are mostly getting away with it. Shame really but in the
overall scheme of things it's pretty trivial.

I checked the archives here and it seemed the consensus was his "retirement" prior to winning World's was a publicity stunt. In retrospect it was an obvious attempt to dodge drug tests, but perhaps there was an overestimation of out-of-competition testing during that era.
