Default Attack cat

Had almost exactly the same experience last Tuesday evening on our
local chaingang training ride ............... except it was a badger,
not a cat.

I did wonder if I had hit the fella and fallen off, whether he'd turn
around and bite me - badgers are supposed to be notoriously aggressive
(especially when ridden over).

It's only the third time I've seen live badger, all of them from the
saddle of my bike. I'm guessing they can't hear you approaching.

Similar thing happened to me years ago in deepest Leicestershire. It was
the middle of winter, my batteries were so cold the lights were running at
fractions of a candle, and I almost ran over him!

Dunno who was more surprised, him or me. Big b*ggers, though!

I came within an inch or two of hitting one in Germany a few years ago.
As this was in my motorcar, which was doing an indicated 100 of the
BRITONS' miles per hour on a downhill bit of autobahn, the consequences
of striking said creature are unpleasant to contemplate.

Auto .sig generator's on form today...

I once followed one some distance through an outer suburb of Reading. It was
dark and I had seen "some sort of animal" but a could not see its head and
misidentified it as possibly a black Staffordshire Bull Terrier pup with a
docked tail; and thought I would see where it went in case it was a family
pet which had gone missing.

Eventually it turned round and shook its head at me as if to say "look
mate - I'm a badger...."

at least my intentions were good I supose; and a wildlife book I later found
in Oxfam mentioned "the badger has a dog-like gait" which made me feel a
little *less* daft....

The only live one I have seen was in Norway (Grevling) and it had the
appearance of a small leather footstool running across the road..

It could almost be the same one, except for the one I saw being much
lighter in colour. Still Meles meles though.
