Cannibal, Badger, Gypsy - those are classics.

The Boss, El Niño... come on

Elefantino wasn't bad
Il Grillo is pretty good

But "The Next Whoever" is expedient.

If done accurately, the 'next whoever' is a quick shorthand to
communicate to the fans the announcer's opinion. If done with context,
it is quite useful, or can be. (Note: there is a difference between:

As to challenging for the home run title, such-and- such may be the
next Barry Bonds

and

With recent grand jury testimony, such-and-such may be the next Barry
Bonds).

Its when it is sloppy and expedient that it is a real problem; more so
if it isn't accurate at all. OTOH, if the reference is positive,
complaining about pressure would be absurd. Either you can get it done
or you can't. You can't blame the announcers if you spend your career
trying to be someone you can't. Look what happened to Zabel trying to
be the next Sean Kelly. A career in disarray and ruin. What he could
have been...

"Contador El Conquistador."

There. Finished. He now has a nickname.

I'll be expecting royalties for the use of it... ;^)

That's very good. He'll even have a theme song by Procol Harum.
Although I cringe at the mispronunciation... they can just play the
instrumental track.

Why would writers put that sort of idiotic load on a young rider. We must
remember that Indurain did not look all that good until he was older than
Contador. He became a force after he lost a lot of weight.

Maybe he ought to be the one and only Alberto Contador and not a new anyone
else.

There will never be another Eddy Merckx, another Bernard Hinault, another
Lance Armstrong nor another Miguel Indurain. Hell, we probably won't see
another Eric Zabel.

See this is because journalists today have no creativity with nicknames;
either that or there truly are no good ones left.

Plenty of good nicknames left, but you cannot waste them on potential.
The Hammer
Roundhouse
Roadhouse
Wolf
Smoke

Who remembers Gordie Howe's nickname? Not Blinky; what
his team mates called him. As a rookie he took a run
at a veteran on the boards. The veteran slipped the
check, Howe concussed himself, and afterwards he had an
odd blink.

You could use up the Seven Dwarfs on most of a team, but who qualifies
as 'Snow White'? I can think of a few Docs, and a whole lot of Dopeys.

Perhaps, but perhaps you should first concentrate on providing Kunich
with an Abortable interface.

Damn that's a beeeaautiful set-up to get REALLY nasty, just like he
usually is. I'll pass on it though.
